Build a Portable PVC Chicken Tractor (Free Plan)

Getting started with backyard chickens can be pricey—especially if you still need a coop, roost, and run. To make things easy (and affordable), we’ve released a free, step-by-step plan for a sturdy PVC chicken tractor you can build quickly with Furniture-Grade PVC pipe and fittings.

What is a chicken tractor?

A chicken tractor is a portable chicken coop/run that you move around your yard or garden. As it moves, your flock gets fresh forage while fertilizing the soil and reducing pests like slugs and snails—no permanent dirt patch required.

Why use one?

  • Fresh forage daily: Rotate to new grass for happier, healthier hens.
  • Natural fertilizing: Nitrogen- and phosphorus-rich droppings enrich the soil.
  • Pest control: Chickens scratch, peck, and till the top inch of soil as they go.
  • Budget-friendly: PVC builds are fast, durable, and easy to repair or modify.

Tip: Move the tractor daily (or every few days) to protect turf, spread nutrients, and keep forage fresh.

Build our PVC Chicken Tractor

This design is ideal for beginners, a temporary habitat while your main coop is under construction, or as a standalone mobile run. It features a hinged access door and uses bird netting (easier to work with than chicken wire) to keep your flock contained and safe.
